Sure, we're getting older. But does that have to mean we live our lives expecting to go downhill? Managing the aging process is geared toward preventing illnesses as well as age-related diseases and no one care more about that than I do.
Whether it's weight gain, hair loss, getting robbed of your mojo, depression, mood swings, insomnia, or memory fogginess, we believe there are ways to address ALL of them and not just some of them, after determining, through testing, just what is at play with your body's systems.
We can rage against the body's response to aging and offer new meaning to the expression "aging gracefully" all at the same time, using a combination of bio-identical (natural, not synthetic) hormone replacement. For women, that means estrogen and testosterone for men, and hormones like DHEA for either gender. As we mentioned in an earlier blog, gut health can also tell us a lot about how your body is processing everything, from your digestive system to your adrenals, and everything in between.
While I frequently speak with my patients about exercise, nutrition, vitamins and any medications they are already taking, the one thing I can't do, however, is MAKE them take my advice. Trust me. ALL these things are important.
One of my patients listed on her intake forms that she had three goals in coming to me for treatment. She wanted (1) her 20+ years of hot flashes to go away for good (2) better, deeper, uninterrupted sleep, and (3) to lose about 20 lbs. Her blood tests indicated all kinds of hormone levels that were out of whack, including thyroid, and I prescribed a fistful of supplements as well as prescription strength bio-identical hormones for her to take morning and night after injecting her with slow-release pellets. (I've cover this aspect in another post -- promise!). She was already working out with a trainer 2-3 times a week, and seemed to understand what truly healthy eating was all about, so those were bases I didn't have to cover.
Within only a few weeks, she told me she was sleeping like an infant. "A freight train could come through my bedroom and I'd never even hear it," she said. No longer kicking covers off and being awakened by night sweats, she was able to fall asleep quickly and slumber deeply once again. "I love going to sleep at night now," she told me. "I have the most entertaining dreams!" As for weight loss, getting her thyroid under control as well as the proper amount of progesterone on board seems to be helping with that as well.
